McMurry College, officially ordained in October, 1920, at the annual session of the Northwest Texas Conference held at Clarendon, Texas, opened its doors three years later in Abilene, Texas. McMurry College succeeded four other Methodist educational institutions of West Texas and New Mexico-Stamford College, Clarendon College, Seth Ward College and Western College. Stamford Collegiate Institution was founded in 1906 by the Methodist church at Stamford, Texas. In 1911, name was changed to Stamford College. The school burned in 1918 and was not rebuilt. Rev.
